How do saving moods work?

Plum is a finance savvy chatbot that uses AI to help you manage your money and be better off. In ‘Making Plum’, you can see Plum evolve and how features are developed.

We shed a little light on how moods impact how much Plum saves for you.

As much as we love automation we also know that sometimes humans (that's you) know best. You might have a one-off bill coming up Plum wouldn't know about or just simply want to save a little more or less. That's why we created 'moods' so you can tell Plum how you're feeling when it comes to how much you want to put into savings.

Since we launched Beast Mode a few of you have been asking how moods work. Without giving too many Plum secrets away 👀 we have broken down how moods actually impact the amount Plum automatically saves for you.

The baseline

This is the total amount Plum plans to save for you over a given month.

Just like everything else, this is totally tailored to you and your recent income/spending/outgoings and is recalculated each and every time Plum tries to make a saving for you.

When your mood is set to 'normal' (the default mood) Plum tries to save this baseline for you over the month. When you change your mood, Plum applies a multiplier to this baseline to increase or reduce the amount Plum plans to save for you across the month.

For example: Beast Mode = Baseline x 1.75 (giving you 75% more savings a month)

You can find how much the baseline will change when you are selecting your moods in Plum.

The safeguards

To make sure Plum doesn't take every penny you have there are also safeguards in place.

One of these is the maximum % of your total balance Plum is allowed to take from when it tries to make a saving. Again, this is totally tailored to you and your recent income/spending/outgoings and is recalculated each and every time Plum tries to make a saving for you.

When you change your mood this safeguard is also changed. The higher the mood the more of your balance Plum will use to save and visa versa.

The frequency

Your savings mood only affects the amounts Plum saves for you, not how often savings are made.

Plum will save for you every 4-5 days if it calculates you can make a saving. If Plum can't make a saving for you, you might find Plum doesn't save as often as that. Don't worry, as soon as Plum can make a saving it will.

Changing your mood won't make Plum save more or less often. This is important because making small but regular savings is key to save without noticing, but we know sometimes life happens. If you want to pause your savings for any period of time just type 'pause'. Plum will automatically start saving again as soon as you tell it to, just select how long you would like to pause or manually turn it back on again, whichever you prefer.
